Billbergia

I have grown this particular bromeliad for over 6 years now and it is one of my favourite, both for flower and foliage. I have planted some of these out on jobs and as long as they are in a more sheltered spot or slightly closer to buildings frost should not kill the plant but some leaf damage is to be expected. I personally bring my larger plants in for winter, either inside the house or it will happily sit in a greenhouse/polytunnel for the colder season. I have very little areas of my garden that are shady and usually find mine end up in a much brighter position then is recommended to sustain the beautiful creamy white variegation, which causes the plant to produce anthocyanins (pinky red tones) that are essentially a natural sunscreen for the plant to prevent burning. Every year my mother plant does this, as well as some of my mangaves, and whilst this can be a stress indicator I have never had an issue and actually find it quite attractive. However if you desire to to retain the creamy white colour then a shadier position is recommended.
