Astelia chathamica

I have grown these for many years and it has easily become one of my favourite hardy evergreens. I have never had an issue with plant loss through the colder seasons and leave mine outside all winter long, though some leaves may sustain some frost damage, but removing these in early spring will redirect it’s energy into new shinier leaves. Originally from New Zealand these plants can be epiphytic, growing on tree branches or out of rocky surfaces, although I keep mine more terrestrial and find they are perfect in pots or planted directly in the ground.

Astelia chathamica

Astelia chathamica or Silver Spear is a robust perennial with bold, sword-shaped leaves that shimmer with a silvery sheen, making it a standout in any landscape. Growing to a height and spread of 90-120 cm, it forms an impressive clump, perfect for adding texture and contrast to borders, coastal gardens, or large containers. Though its greenish-white flowers are inconspicuous, the plant’s stunning foliage more than compensates. Astelia chathamica thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. Its tolerance for salty winds makes it an excellent choice for coastal areas. Hardy and low-maintenance, it is non-toxic and safe for gardens where pets and children may roam. Whether you’re looking to add structure or a silvery touch to your outdoor space, Astelia chathamica offers a dramatic yet elegant option for gardeners seeking bold, architectural foliage.
