Beschorneria yuccoides

In the past few years Beschorneria have become one of favourite garden plants. Native to Mexico these are both cold hardy, and heat/ drought tolerant making them a great choice for down here in Bournemouth. Despite the name yuccoides and the spiky appearance these plants are completely soft to the touch making them a great choice if you like the spiky look, but not so much the feeling. I grow a few of these for my own garden and very excitingly one of mine is flowering for the first time, seen in the images displayed. I grow mine in pots as I love the way the way the lower leaves cascade around the edges, and I find it much easier to store them in a greenhouse overwinter – mostly to control the moisture level (as they don’t like to be too wet in the colder months), opposed to the temperature as once established they are H3 hardy (-5-1) and in a sheltered spot would probably tolerate slightly lower. I have a couple of different sizes so please feel free to contact me if this beauty catches your eye the same way it does for me.

Beschorneria yuccoides

Beschorneria yuccoides, commonly known as Mexican Lily, is a striking architectural perennial admired for its bold foliage and unusual flower spikes. The plant forms large rosettes of smooth, arching blue-green leaves that create a dramatic, almost tropical appearance in the garden. In late spring to early summer, tall, elegant flower spikes rise well above the foliage, displaying tubular green flowers accompanied by distinctive reddish-pink bracts that add vibrant colour and structural interest. Typically reaching heights of 120–150 cm with a spread of around 90–120 cm, Beschorneria yuccoides makes an excellent focal point in borders, gravel gardens, or contemporary planting schemes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, performing particularly well in sheltered positions where its architectural form can be appreciated. Drought tolerant once established and generally low maintenance, this plant brings a strong sculptural quality to garden designs. With its dramatic foliage and striking flowering stems, Beschorneria yuccoides is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to introduce bold structure and a touch of exotic character to their outdoor spaces.
