Billbergia nutans

Billbergia is one of my favourite bromeliads and find that they are generally very fuss free. Whilst outdoor planting should be fine in a sheltered position I personally keep mine in pots to transfer either inside or in a greenhouse/ polytunnel for winter storage. I always eagerly await the flowering period when the bright pink bracts really shine against the grey-green foliage. I have a rather large mother plant that is desperate for division so more of these will be available.

Billbergia nutans

Billbergia nutans, commonly known as Queen’s Tears, is a graceful bromeliad celebrated for its elegant arching foliage and unusual hanging flowers. The plant forms clumps of narrow, strap-like grey-green leaves that create a soft architectural shape and bring texture to planting displays. In spring, slender flower stems emerge, carrying nodding clusters of green flowers with pink bracts and blue-purple tips, creating a delicate and eye-catching display. Billbergia nutans is well suited to containers, sheltered borders, conservatories, and indoor planting, where its unique form and flowers can be appreciated. I have grown this particular bromeliad for over 6 years now and it is one of my favourite, both for flower and foliage. I have planted some of these out on jobs and as long as they are in a more sheltered spot or slightly closer to buildings frost should not kill the plant but some leaf damage is to be expected. I personally bring my larger plants in for winter, either inside the house or it will happily sit in a greenhouse/polytunnel for the colder season. I have very little areas of my garden that are shady and usually find mine end up in a much brighter position then is recommended to sustain the beautiful creamy white variegation, which causes the plant to produce anthocyanins (pinky red tones) that are essentially a natural sunscreen for the plant to prevent burning. Every year my mother plant does this, as well as some of my mangaves, and whilst this can be a stress indicator I have never had an issue and actually find it quite attractive. However if you desire to to retain the creamy white colour then a shadier position is recommended.
