Beschorneria yuccoides
In the past few years Beschorneria have become one of favourite garden plants. Native to Mexico these are both cold hardy, and heat/ drought tolerant making them a great choice for down here in Bournemouth. Despite the name yuccoides and the spiky appearance these plants are completely soft to the touch making them a great choice if you like the spiky look, but not so much the feeling. I grow a few of these for my own garden and very excitingly one of mine is flowering for the first time, seen in the images displayed. I grow mine in pots as I love the way the way the lower leaves cascade around the edges, and I find it much easier to store them in a greenhouse overwinter – mostly to control the moisture level (as they don’t like to be too wet in the colder months), opposed to the temperature as once established they are H3 hardy (-5-1) and in a sheltered spot would probably tolerate slightly lower. I have a couple of different sizes so please feel free to contact me if this beauty catches your eye the same way it does for me.
