Berginia cordiflora

Although they often get a bad wrap, as they provide shelter for a variety of garden critters, I personally love Bergenia cordifolia, as it is undeniably resilient and robust, and in the right spot will give a beautiful pink show of long lasting flowers year after year. Native to Siberia and high mountain regions of Central Asia these plants readily multiply, providing great ground cover and giving gardeners the opportunity to make further use of the plant by lifting and splitting – for the best results this should be done after flowering.

Berginia cordiflora

Bergenia cordifolia, commonly known as Elephant’s Ears, is a robust and reliable perennial grown for its bold foliage and cheerful spring flowers. The plant forms clumps of large, rounded, glossy green leaves that provide year-round interest and often develop attractive red or bronze tones during the colder months. In early to mid spring, upright stems rise above the foliage bearing clusters of vibrant pink to rosy purple flowers, creating a colourful display that brightens borders and shaded areas. Reaching a height of around 30–45 cm with a spread of 45–60 cm, Bergenia cordifolia is well suited to use as ground cover, in mixed borders, woodland gardens, or containers. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist but well-drained, fertile soil, though it is also known for its tolerance of a range of garden conditions once established. Tough, low-maintenance, and long-lived, this perennial provides structure, texture, and seasonal colour throughout the year. With its bold foliage and vibrant spring flowers, Bergenia cordifolia is a dependable choice for gardeners looking to add lasting interest and colour to their garden spaces.
